Yosemite National Park stands out as one of the best vacation spots for kids in our opinion! It offers a unique opportunity to immerse your family in nature, create lasting memories, and embark on adventures that are both educational and incredibly fun.

Planning Your Yosemite Family Adventure with Kids

Our journey began with setting up camp just outside the park. As our trip was a bit last-minute, we weren’t able to secure a reservation inside Yosemite National Park itself. This is a crucial tip for anyone planning a visit:

Plan Ahead: To guarantee a spot, whether it’s a tent campsite, cabin, or hotel room within the park, you should aim to book approximately a year in advance, especially for popular summer dates. Yosemite’s immense popularity means accommodations fill up incredibly fast.

Before you hit the road, remember to grab your National Parks Pass, which can offer free admission and save your family money. For those embracing the camping experience, here’s a helpful link to all the things to pack for camping, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your wilderness adventure.

Is Yosemite Kid-Friendly? Absolutely!

If you’ve never taken your family to a National Park, Yosemite is an absolute must-do. It’s not just about enjoying the breathtaking natural beauty; it’s about creating indelible memories that your children will cherish for a lifetime. Yosemite provides an unparalleled outdoor classroom where kids can connect with nature, learn about ecosystems, and marvel at geological wonders.

Our Top Yosemite Activities for Families:

  • The Valley Floor Bus Tour: A Gentle Introduction to Yosemite’s Wonders
    • The first activity we embarked on inside Yosemite was the Valley Floor bus tour. This guided, open-air tour lasted approximately two hours and transported us to some of the most iconic and beautiful sites within Yosemite Valley.
    • It’s an excellent option for families with children because the open bus design allows for unobstructed views from every seat, making it easy for little ones to take in the scenery without feeling cooped up.
    • The bus makes frequent stops, typically every 20 minutes or so, allowing passengers to disembark, explore each location, take photos, and, importantly, use the restrooms – a crucial convenience when traveling with kids! This flexibility ensures everyone stays comfortable and engaged.

The stunning photograph at the top of this post, a personal favorite, was captured during one of our scenic stops along the Valley Floor tour.

The middle panel features a tall, brown building partially obscured by trees, reminiscent of the lodges you might find when exploring things to do in Yosemite with kids. The third panel shows a young girl wearing a red shirt and colorful pipe cleaner glasses, smiling.

Beyond the Trails: Unique Things to Do in Yosemite with Kids (Other Than Hiking)

While hiking is synonymous with Yosemite, there are plenty of other fantastic experiences for families to enjoy. On our second day, we indulged in an unforgettable breakfast at the magnificent Ahwahnee Hotel’s dining room within Yosemite Park. We had heard rave reviews about their culinary offerings, and it certainly lived up to the hype!

  • We savored their sumptuous buffet, and I personally ordered a dish that had earned an A+ rating in Bon Appetit Magazine. Their Cinnamon Apple Flapjacks were absolutely divine – a perfect start to an adventurous day!

What truly impressed us was how the Ahwahnee Hotel staff kept our kids entertained throughout the meal. Instead of traditional coloring pages, they provided Wikki Stix – a brilliant and creative solution that kept the little ones happily occupied. It’s these thoughtful touches that make a family dining experience truly special. 😉

Merced River Rafting: A Family Favorite in Yosemite

Without a doubt, one of the absolute best things to do in Yosemite with kids was our river rafting adventure down the Merced River! This experience was the undeniable highlight of our entire trip and comes highly recommended for families visiting the park.

  • The Merced River offers a remarkably calm and gentle rafting experience, with only a handful of small, gentle dips along the way. This makes it absolutely perfect for young children and incredibly relaxing for parents, who can truly sit back and soak in the scenery.
  • Rafters have the freedom to stop multiple times at various small sandy beaches along the riverbanks, taking as much time as they desire to swim, picnic, and simply enjoy the serene environment before continuing their journey to the end.
  • Pro Tip: Pack a delicious picnic lunch to enjoy at one of the riverside beaches. Wear swimsuits under your clothing so you can easily take a refreshing dip in the cool river waters.
  • The entire experience, from start to finish, typically takes around three hours, offering a perfect balance of activity and relaxation.
  • At the designated endpoint, a convenient shuttle service picks up all rafters and transports you back to your starting point or vehicle.

We enthusiastically recommend this activity for any family visiting Yosemite. It’s a wonderful way to experience the park from a different perspective and create joyful memories together.

We truly spent a significant amount of our time simply exploring Yosemite’s vast beauty. This involved taking countless pictures and making spontaneous stops along the scenic roads at various spots where the kids could safely get out, play, and even swim in shallow areas.

  • On one particularly memorable day, we wisely packed our beach chairs and a hearty lunch. We found a perfect spot to simply sit back, relax, and soak in the breathtaking views while the kids happily played in the water and amongst the smooth river rocks. It was a day of pure relaxation and simple joys.
