Searching for that perfect holiday breakfast recipe, especially for Christmas morning, or simply a comforting weekend treat for your family? This fresh apple monkey bread, made with convenient Pillsbury biscuits or cinnamon rolls, takes our classic easy monkey bread recipe to an extraordinary level. Its simplicity combined with incredible flavor makes it an absolute winner in any home kitchen.

Crafting the Perfect Apple Monkey Bread Recipe

One of the many reasons to adore this recipe is its incredible versatility. Starting with plain refrigerated biscuits or even frozen rolls provides a fantastic base, allowing for endless customization. You can easily adapt it with different fruits, a drizzle of caramel, or any other flavor combination your heart desires. This pre-made dough base significantly cuts down on prep time, making it a dream for busy mornings or spontaneous baking sessions.

A Sweet Twist: Using Cinnamon Rolls

For those with a sweeter tooth, opting for refrigerated cinnamon rolls instead of plain biscuits introduces an extra layer of sweetness and cinnamon spice directly into the bread. The primary difference between this and our cherry cheesecake monkey bread is simply the initial sweetness level. No adjustments to the cooking time or the core ingredients below are needed, making this a straightforward substitution for a delightful variation.

Essential Ingredients for Apple Monkey Bread

Creating this irresistible apple monkey bread requires just a few key ingredients. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the readily available items you’ll need:

  1. Refrigerated Biscuits or Cinnamon Rolls: You’ll need three containers of regular-sized refrigerated biscuits. Alternatively, use refrigerated cinnamon rolls for a sweeter flavor profile, similar to how we made our mini apple pies. Ensure they are not the “Grands” variety, as they are larger and require different cutting.
  2. Fresh Apples: Three large apples are ideal. Fuji apples are highly recommended for their crisp texture and balanced sweet-tart flavor, which holds up beautifully during baking. If you dice them in advance, a splash of lemon juice can prevent browning, keeping them looking fresh.
  3. Dry Apple Cider Mix: One box of dry apple cider mix (the kind used for hot cider drinks) is the secret ingredient that infuses a wonderful autumnal flavor. You can pour this sugary mix into a large baggie with the dough pieces and shake to coat, or dip each piece individually in a small bowl.
  4. Melted Butter: A generous amount of melted butter, salted or unsalted, helps create that signature gooey texture and rich flavor.

Delicious Variations and Topping Ideas

While the classic apple monkey bread is fantastic on its own, feel free to get creative with additions and toppings. Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

  • Nuts: Add 1/2 to 1 cup of chopped nuts like honey-roasted pecans, walnuts, or almonds for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Frosting/Glaze: Enhance the sweetness with a warm tub of vanilla frosting or use the icing packets that come with your cinnamon rolls. For an even more decadent finish, you might need a little extra frosting!
  • Powdered Sugar: A simple dusting of powdered sugar offers an elegant and light touch.
  • Caramel Drizzle: A warm caramel sauce can transform this into an even more indulgent dessert.
  • Cinnamon-Sugar Sprinkle: A classic cinnamon-sugar mixture sprinkled on top before baking adds a lovely crust and extra spice.

Using Frozen Dough: Rhodes Rolls for Monkey Bread

Absolutely, you can make monkey bread with Rhodes frozen rolls! This opens up possibilities for Chocolate Monkey Bread or simply using plain rolls for this apple variation. The main difference is the preparation time. Frozen rolls will need to defrost thoroughly, covered, before you can quarter them and toss them in the apple cider and spice mixture. Plan ahead for this extra step, allowing enough time for them to become pliable.

Fall months are a wonderful time to visit apple orchards and pick a bounty of different varieties. There’s no better way to enjoy the season’s harvest than by baking with them! Apples add incredible flavor, natural sweetness, and essential moisture to both sweet and savory dishes. This recipe is a fantastic way to utilize those fresh-picked treasures.

When selecting your refrigerated biscuits, opt for the regular sizes rather than “Grands.” The larger “Grands” biscuits are thicker and would need to be cut into sixths instead of fourths to ensure even cooking and a manageable bite-sized piece. If Grands are all you have available, simply adjust your cutting to create smaller, uniform pieces.

Expert Tips for Perfect Apple Monkey Bread

Achieving that iconic ooey-gooey, yet perfectly cooked monkey bread requires a few essential tips:

  • Thorough Coating: Ensure every single piece of biscuit or cinnamon roll dough is thoroughly coated with the dry apple cider mix. This is crucial for infusing flavor and creating the wonderful outer texture.
  • Preheat Your Oven: Always preheat your oven to the specified temperature before placing the bundt pan inside. This ensures consistent baking from the start.
  • Don’t Overbake: The key to gooey monkey bread is to avoid overbaking. You want the dough pieces cooked through in the middle, but the overall bread should remain delightfully soft and sticky. A very light golden brown on top is usually the perfect indicator.
  • Cool Before Flipping: While it’s tempting to flip it out immediately, allowing the monkey bread to cool slightly in the pan helps it set. This makes it much easier to release in one beautiful, intact piece onto your serving platter.
  • Immediate Gratification (Optional): If presentation isn’t your top priority, feel free to flip it over immediately and dig in with forks! It’s equally delicious warm and fresh out of the oven.
  • Serve Warm: Monkey bread is always best served warm. The warmth enhances the gooey texture and releases all the wonderful apple and spice aromas.

The brief resting period in the pan after baking truly makes a difference for a picture-perfect presentation. Choose a sturdy cake platter or plate that can comfortably accommodate the entire bundt cake.

Slow Cooker Apple Monkey Bread?

Yes, you can certainly make monkey bread in a slow cooker! While baking in a bundt pan in the oven generally yields a superior texture with crisper edges and a more defined pull-apart quality, the slow cooker offers a convenient alternative. Our Crockpot Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread recipe shows you how. Be aware that the slow cooker version might be a bit wetter and have a softer, more uniformly steamed texture, but it’s still a delicious option.

Muffin Pan Monkey Bread: A Grab-and-Go Delight

Absolutely! Baking monkey bread in a muffin pan is a fantastic option, especially for individual servings or a grab-and-go breakfast. This method allows for quicker baking and creates adorable, portion-controlled treats. Our apple pie monkey bread muffins specifically use canned pie filling for ease, which works exceptionally well for this format.

Once you flip your apple monkey bread and drizzle it with vanilla icing, it should look wonderfully enticing, just like a bakery masterpiece. While you could leave it plain, as with our apple cake with cake mix, a touch of icing adds that extra “wow” factor. A simple sugar and cinnamon mixture also makes a delightful topping. Don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t look overly sticky sweet when it first comes out of the oven; all the gooey goodness settles at the bottom, ready to be revealed when flipped.

Equipment

  • 1 bundt pan
  • 1 Bowl

Ingredients

  • 3 containers refrigerated biscuits, or refrigerated cinnamon rolls, not frozen, regular size not Grands
  • 3 large apples, cored, peeled, diced
  • 5 pouches apple cider mix
  • 1/2-1 c pecans, honey roasted, crushed (optional)
  • 6 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Cut each biscuit or cinnamon roll into fourths and place them into a large bowl. Core, peel, and dice the apples, setting them aside in a separate bowl. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Empty all 5 dry apple cider mix packets into the bowl containing the cut dough pieces. Gently toss until all pieces are thoroughly coated. This can be done by shaking them in a large baggie or tossing them in a bowl with your hands or a spoon.
  3. Generously spray a large bundt pan with non-stick cooking spray, ensuring all crevices are covered to prevent sticking.
  4. Sprinkle approximately one-third of the coated dough pieces evenly into the bottom of the prepared bundt pan. Follow this with half of your diced apples and half of the optional chopped nuts (if using).
  5. Layer another third of the cut dough pieces on top of the apple and nut layer. Then, add the remaining diced apples and nuts.
  6. Finally, sprinkle the last third of the cinnamon roll or biscuit pieces on the very top, forming the final layer.
  7. Melt the butter. If using cinnamon rolls that come with icing, add approximately 1/4 cup of the icing (or one packet) to the melted butter and whisk until combined. If using biscuits, you can use additional melted butter or prepare a simple glaze. Pour this mixture evenly over the layers in the bundt pan. Cover the bundt pan tightly with aluminum foil.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes with the foil cover. Then, carefully remove the foil and continue baking for another 5-10 minutes, or until the top pieces are a very light golden brown and the dough is cooked through.
  9. Remove the bundt pan from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 10-15 minutes. Gently loosen the sides of the monkey bread from the pan with a knife to aid in its release.
  10. Place a serving cake plate or large platter on top of the bundt pan. Carefully and confidently, flip the bundt pan over onto the plate. You may need to jiggle it gently or leave the pan upside down for a few minutes on top of the plate to allow gravity to help release the monkey bread completely.
  11. If you have any remaining melted vanilla frosting or a prepared glaze, drizzle it generously over the warm apple monkey bread. Serve immediately and enjoy!
