Mastering Your Pressure Cooker: Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to the world of pressure cooking, welcome! This appliance is a game-changer for preparing delicious, one-pot meals quickly and efficiently. To help you get started on your culinary journey, here are a few essential tips:

  • Explore Our Recipe Collection: Make sure to bookmark our Instant Pot recipes page. We regularly add new and exciting recipes to inspire your cooking adventures.
  • Quick Reference Guide: Print this Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet. It’s an invaluable tool that will help you understand the ideal cooking durations for various ingredients like meats, vegetables, and beans in your pressure cooker.
  • Invest in a Quality Pot: I highly recommend you purchase a non-stick inner pot for your Instant Pot. This significantly simplifies cleanup and helps prevent food from sticking, especially after sautéing.
  • Understand Deglazing: Even with a non-stick pot, it’s good practice to know how to deglaze your pressure cooker after sautéing. This prevents the “burn” notice and ensures all those flavorful bits become part of your dish.

From Orchard to Instant Pot: The Joy of Fresh Apples

Our journey to this incredible cranberry applesauce began with a fantastic apple-picking trip right here in Idaho. We returned home with a staggering 65 pounds of fresh apples from a local farm! While they offered several varieties, Fuji apples are my absolute favorite, so a large portion of our haul consisted of these crisp, sweet beauties. You might think 65 pounds is excessive, but with a dedicated cold room, these apples will stay perfectly fresh for several months, ready for all sorts of culinary creations.

If you’re wondering where to find a similar experience near you, a quick online search for “apple picking [your city/state]” will likely reveal local farms offering fresh, seasonal produce. There’s truly nothing comparable to the taste of fruit picked directly from the tree – it’s miles ahead of store-bought apples in terms of freshness and flavor. Plus, buying in bulk from local farms often proves to be significantly more economical, especially when you plan to make large batches of delicious treats like homemade applesauce.

Cinnamon Cranberry Apple Sauce Recipe: Flavorful Variations

One of the greatest advantages of making applesauce from scratch is the freedom to experiment with flavors. This recipe for cranberry applesauce is a fantastic base, but don’t hesitate to personalize it with your favorite spices. For those who adore warm, comforting notes, a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg works wonders, enhancing the natural sweetness and tartness of the fruit. Consider adding a pinch of allspice or ground cloves for an even deeper, more complex flavor profile, especially during the colder months.

Crafting Sugar-Free Cranberry Applesauce

For families mindful of sugar intake, or individuals managing dietary restrictions like diabetes, creating a sugar-free version of this cranberry applesauce is incredibly simple. Instead of traditional brown sugar, opt for sugar substitutes like Stevia or Truvia. They even offer a Truvia brown sugar blend that provides a similar depth of flavor and texture, allowing everyone to enjoy this delightful treat without compromise. Additionally, for a naturally sweeter base, choose apple varieties known for their high sugar content, such as Fuji or Honeycrisp.

With our massive apple haul, we’ve been busy exploring countless easy apple recipes (and still have plenty to go!). Beyond the usual pies and crisps, I started thinking creatively about how to utilize our leftover cranberries, as I strongly dislike wasting food. What began as a mere experiment to prevent waste turned into an unexpected culinary triumph!

I have to admit, this cranberry-infused version might just surpass my beloved plain Instant Pot applesauce! The visual appeal alone is stunning as it cooks, transforming into a beautiful, jewel-toned puree.

Just a few minutes in the pressure cooker, along with the added sweetness from brown sugar and maple syrup, transformed these humble ingredients into something truly special. My initial timing attempt resulted in a consistency closer to a cranberry Instant Pot apple crisp – a delicious outcome in itself, but not quite applesauce! A slight adjustment to the cooking time yielded the perfect tender consistency, which I’m thrilled to share in the detailed recipe card below for this exquisite Instant Pot cranberry applesauce.

Achieving Perfection: The Ideal Cooking Time for Homemade Applesauce

The cooking time for homemade applesauce can vary depending on several factors, ensuring you get the perfect texture every time. Understanding these variables is key:

  • Apple Size: Larger apples will naturally require a slightly longer cooking time to soften completely. Consistent sizing is more important than actual size, aim for uniform pieces.
  • Apple Slice Thickness: Thicker apple slices will take longer to break down compared to thinner slices. If you prefer a very quick cook, thin slices are your friend.
  • Apple Variety: Different apple varieties have varying levels of firmness, which directly impacts their cooking time:
    • Granny Smith apples are known for being the firmest and most tart, requiring the longest cook time. They hold their shape well, making them ideal for chunky applesauce.
    • Fuji apples are the second firmest but offer a sweeter profile than Granny Smiths. They provide a good balance of texture and flavor for applesauce.
    • Softer varieties like Red Delicious, Gala, or Golden Delicious will cook much faster, yielding a smoother applesauce with less effort.
  • Desired Chunky or Smooth Texture: Your preference for chunky versus smooth applesauce also dictates how long you might let it cook and how much you process it afterward.

How to Make Homemade Applesauce Chunky: Tips for Texture Enthusiasts

For those who appreciate a rustic, chunky texture in their homemade applesauce, here’s how to achieve it:

  • Choose Firm Apples: Start with Granny Smith or Fuji apples. Their inherent firmness ensures they don’t completely disintegrate during cooking.
  • Thick Slices: Cut your apples into thicker slices, about ½ to ¾ inch. This helps them retain some bite and structure after cooking.
  • Consider the Skin: For an even more textured and nutritious applesauce, consider leaving about half of the apple skin on. You can see a bit of this in the photo below, adding to the visual and textural appeal. The skins contain beneficial fiber and give a lovely speckled look.
  • Mind Your Liquid: Use the designated 1/3 cup of liquid. While water works, apple cider is my preference. It infuses an extra layer of apple flavor, complementing the cranberries beautifully without making the applesauce too thin.

While the cooked Instant Pot cranberry applesauce might not look as pristine as the pre-cooked ingredients, rest assured, its incredible flavor more than makes up for it. It’s a dish where taste truly triumphs over initial appearance!

Achieving Silky Smooth Applesauce: Tips for a Fine Puree

If a velvety smooth applesauce is what you crave, perfect for baby food or a refined dessert topping, here’s how to achieve that luxurious consistency:

  • Select Softer Apple Varieties: Opt for red delicious, gala, or pink lady apples. These varieties break down more easily during cooking.
  • Thin Slices: Slice your apples on the thinner side (about ¼ inch). Smaller pieces cook faster and result in a smoother texture.
  • Remove All Skins: Ensure all apple skins are completely removed. This is crucial for a perfectly smooth puree.
  • Adjust Liquid Content: You can use up to 1/2 cup of liquid. More liquid will result in a thinner applesauce, which is ideal if you’re making baby food in your Instant Pot (though I wouldn’t recommend using cranberries for infant applesauce due to their tartness).

I personally enjoy a slight tartness in my cranberry applesauce, which I highly recommend for a balanced flavor profile. However, if you prefer it sweeter, follow the recipe below, then taste the finished product. If it needs a little more sweetness, simply stir in an additional tablespoon of maple syrup or one to two tablespoons of brown sugar, mix well, and taste again until it’s just right.

I’m confident you’ll find our pressure cooker cranberry applesauce perfectly delicious as is. It also stores exceptionally well, making it ideal for meal prepping! Transfer your freshly made applesauce into large mason jars. Stored in the refrigerator, it will maintain its deliciousness for at least a week, providing a convenient and healthy snack or side whenever you desire.

Frequently Asked Questions About Homemade Applesauce

Can you make homemade applesauce with other fruits?

Absolutely! While apples are the classic base, you can easily substitute or add other fruits. Pears, for instance, make an excellent alternative using the same steps. For a delightful combination, try adding fruits like berries, peaches, or even mango along with your apples, much like we’ve done with this cranberry applesauce recipe. This introduces new flavor elements, a varying degree of sweetness or tartness, and makes for a fun, creative twist, especially for holiday gatherings.

Can you make applesauce without added sugar?

Yes, entirely! To achieve naturally sweet applesauce, select inherently sweeter apple varieties such as Fuji or Honeycrisp. These apples naturally contain higher sugar levels, reducing or eliminating the need for added sweeteners. If you still desire a touch more sweetness without refined sugar, you can incorporate natural alternatives like a drizzle of maple syrup or agave nectar after cooking and tasting.

Equipment

  • 1 pressure cooker

Ingredients

  • 8 large apples, we used fuji, granny smith are good too
  • 1/3 cup apple cider
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 3/4 cup cranberries, fresh, whole
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/3 cup if you want it sweeter

Instructions

  1. Core and skin all apples (sometimes I leave half the skin on for texture). Cut into thick slices and put into your Instant Pot.
  2. Pour your apple cider in, drizzle on top your maple syrup, pour melted butter on top, put in cranberries (can increase to 1 cup if desired), and sprinkle your brown sugar on top.
  3. Close lid and steam valve and set to high for 9 minutes.
  4. Do a quick release when done.
  5. Use an immersion blender to smooth applesauce or if you want it chunkier (like we do) just use a whisk inside your pot to break down apples but leave it as thick of a consistency as you’d like.
  6. Serve!
