Unlocking Flavor: Instant Pot & Ninja Foodi Shrimp Alfredo
If you haven’t yet experienced the magic of cooking shrimp in your Instant Pot, prepare to be amazed! Pressure cooking is by far the quickest and most reliable method to achieve perfectly pink, tender shrimp every single time. For this recipe, we combine plump shrimp with store-bought Alfredo sauce and pasta noodles, transforming them into a remarkably fast, economical, and undeniably delicious meal that everyone will love. The best part? This versatile pressure cooker recipe works seamlessly in any brand of electric pressure cooker you own, including the popular Ninja Foodi.
This recipe showcases an excellent technique for preparing one of our top Instant Pot shrimp recipes, requiring only a mere 1 minute of high-pressure cooking time. We typically incorporate raw, thawed shrimp directly into the pot, allowing all the ingredients to meld and cook together harmoniously. However, if you have frozen shrimp on hand, we’ll guide you through how to use them effectively as well.
For optimal results when making this Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo, we recommend thawing your shrimp overnight in the refrigerator. Adding thawed, raw shrimp ensures they cook perfectly alongside the pasta and sauce, resulting in a wonderfully integrated one-pot meal.
Essential Tips for Instant Pot Newcomers

- Bookmark our Instant Pot recipes page. We frequently add new and exciting dishes!
- Print this handy Instant Pot cooking times cheat sheet. It’s an invaluable resource for understanding how long various ingredients like meat, vegetables, and beans take to cook in your pressure cooker.
- Consider investing in a high-quality non-stick inner pot. While it’s always good to understand how to deglaze a pressure cooker after sautéing, a non-stick pot significantly reduces the chances of food sticking and burning, making cleanup a breeze.
For reference, the model we use for all our recipe creations is a 6-quart Instant Pot, a versatile size suitable for most family meals.

Convenience Meets Flavor: Shrimp Alfredo with Jarred Sauce and Flexible Shrimp Options
One of the beauties of this Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo is its flexibility with ingredients. You can confidently use either fresh or frozen shrimp, depending on what you have available. Mastering how to cook frozen shrimp in your Instant Pot can be a game-changer, allowing you to whip up a satisfying bowl of these delightful crustaceans for a quick lunch or dinner. Our family, for instance, is absolutely obsessed with all things seafood, with even our youngest members developing a love for shrimp and other oceanic delights!
If your family hasn’t yet discovered the joy of shrimp, or if you’re looking to expand your seafood repertoire beyond our popular Instant Pot fish recipe, this dish is an excellent introduction. It’s a wonderful way to bring new flavors to the table. This particular recipe for Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo also fits perfectly into our collection of Instant Pot casseroles, as everything cooks beautifully in a single pot, minimizing both cooking time and cleanup.

For those who like to incorporate more vegetables, feel free to add about 1/2 cup of frozen peas to the pot – they cook quickly and add a pop of color and freshness. You’ll be astonished by the creamy, perfectly cooked results achieved with such a short pressure cooking time. The ease of cooking pasta right in the Instant Pot, eliminating the need for a separate stovetop pot, is a definite advantage and contributes to the overall simplicity of this delicious meal.
Choosing the Best Shrimp for Your Instant Pot Alfredo
Selecting the right shrimp is crucial for achieving the best texture and flavor in your Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo. Here’s what we recommend:
- Jumbo Size Shrimp: While they might appear large before cooking, jumbo shrimp shrink considerably when heated, transforming into perfect, bite-sized pieces that are substantial enough to stand up to the rich Alfredo sauce and pasta.
- Thawed Shrimp:
- We highly recommend using thawed shrimp. Adding completely frozen shrimp can release excess water into the pot, potentially making your pasta sauce thinner than desired, which is not our preference for a creamy Alfredo.
- If you have frozen raw shrimp, you can learn how to cook them separately to avoid diluting your sauce. However, for this one-pot recipe, thawing is best.
- You can purchase shrimp already thawed from the meat counter, or buy frozen and simply leave them in a bowl or bag in the refrigerator overnight to thaw gently.
- Shells and Tails Removed: This goes without saying, but it’s essential to use shrimp that are already peeled and deveined, with tails removed. Trying to remove shells and tails after the dish is cooked would be incredibly messy and detract from the enjoyment of this seamless one-pot meal. Ensure all shells and tails are removed before adding the shrimp to your pressure cooker.

Key Ingredients for Your Easy Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo
Gathering your ingredients is the first step to creating this incredibly simple and delicious meal. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll need:
- Jumbo Shrimp: Approximately 12-15 pieces, raw, peeled, deveined, and tails removed. Thawed shrimp are recommended for the best texture and sauce consistency.
- Alfredo Sauce: A 15-ounce jar of your favorite Alfredo sauce makes this recipe incredibly quick and convenient.
- Homemade Option: If you prefer to make your own Cajun Alfredo sauce or a traditional version, feel free! Just ensure you have about 2 cups (roughly 15 oz) and whisk it until smooth in a separate bowl before adding to the pot.
- Pasta Noodles: Medium-sized pasta works best for this dish. Rotini, medium shells, or penne are excellent choices as they hold the creamy sauce well.
- Onion: About 1/3 cup, diced. Optional, but adds a lovely depth of flavor.
- Minced Garlic: One tablespoon. This addition significantly enhances the savory profile of the dish and is highly recommended.
- Liquid: One cup of water or, for enhanced flavor, vegetable or chicken broth. Any broth will work beautifully to create the rich sauce.
- Grated Cheese: 1/4 cup each of Parmesan cheese and/or Romano cheese. We love a mix of both for a richer, tangier finish. These are added at the end for melting.
Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste after cooking, if desired. We typically find that store-bought Alfredo sauce contains ample seasoning, so we often don’t add much extra. If you wish to incorporate other meats, such as cooked chicken, ensure it is pre-cooked and diced before adding it to the Instant Pot.
Gluten-Free Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo: Possible Adaptations
Absolutely, you can easily adapt this Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo recipe to be gluten-free by using gluten-free pasta. While individual brands and pasta shapes can vary, generally, the cooking time for most gluten-free pasta types in a pressure cooker is interchangeable with their traditional counterparts. Therefore, you should follow the recommended cook time of 3 minutes at high pressure. If you prefer your small noodles more al dente, reduce the cook time to 2 minutes.
After the pressure release, if you find your gluten-free pasta isn’t quite as tender as you’d like, you can simply switch the Instant Pot to the sauté function. Allow the pasta to gently “boil” in the sauce for an extra minute or two, stirring frequently, until it reaches your preferred level of tenderness. This small adjustment ensures your gluten-free Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo is just as delicious and perfectly cooked as the traditional version.

Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Instant Pot Shrimp Pasta
Creating this flavorful Instant Pot Shrimp Alfredo is straightforward with these easy-to-follow steps:
- Combine Aromatics and Sauce: Begin by adding your diced onions, minced garlic, and the entire jar of Alfredo sauce into your Instant Pot. Stir these ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined. If you prefer your shrimp a bit more cooked through or want to infuse more flavor, you can add the peeled and deveined shrimp at this stage. (As shown in our photos, we typically add them in early.)
- Add Liquid and Layer Shrimp: Pour in your water or broth and stir gently until the sauce mixture is smooth. Carefully place your peeled jumbo shrimp on top of the sauce and liquid mixture. If you are using very tiny shrimp, hold off on adding them until later to prevent overcooking.
- Submerge Pasta: Evenly pour your uncooked noodles into the pot. Gently push and stir them to ensure they are mostly submerged in the liquid. This is crucial for even cooking and to prevent a “burn” notice.
- Pressure Cook: Securely close the lid of your Instant Pot and ensure the steam release valve is set to the sealing position. Set the Instant Pot to cook on High Pressure for 3 minutes. (If you prefer your small noodles to be more al dente, reduce the cooking time to 2 minutes.)
- Release Pressure and Finish: Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a quick release of the pressure. If you opted to add very small shrimp later, simply stir them into the hot Alfredo pasta now and close the lid for about 5 minutes, allowing the residual heat to perfectly steam them. Finally, add the grated Romano and Parmesan cheeses and stir until they are fully melted and incorporated, creating a luscious, creamy sauce. Serve immediately and enjoy!
