Transform your mornings with these incredibly simple and irresistibly delicious
Pecan Sticky Buns made with Crescent Rolls. Ready in under 30
minutes, this semi-homemade recipe takes a clever shortcut by using
refrigerated crescent roll dough, delivering all the sticky-sweet, nutty
goodness you crave without the fuss of traditional yeast dough. Imagine
waking up to the aroma of warm caramel, toasted pecans, and a hint of
cinnamon, all perfectly baked into soft, tender buns. This recipe is your
secret weapon for impressive breakfasts, easy brunches, or a delightful
dessert that will have everyone asking for more.

At The Typical Mom, our philosophy revolves around making life easier and more
delicious. That’s why we’re obsessed with semi-homemade solutions that don’t
compromise on taste. These sticky buns are a prime example – a culinary hack
that saves you time and effort, allowing you to enjoy a gourmet-like treat with
minimal stress. Whether it’s a bustling weekday, a lazy weekend morning, or a
special holiday gathering, these crescent roll sticky buns are guaranteed to be
a crowd-pleaser.
Unforgettable Pecan Sticky Buns: A Delightful Morning Treat
The magic of sticky buns lies in their unique baking method, where the luscious
toppings are placed at the bottom of the pan. As these delightful buns bake in
the oven, the sweet mixture of butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup
melds and caramelizes, creating an irresistible, gooey sauce. This ingenious
“upside-down” approach ensures that every single bun is thoroughly coated in
the rich, sticky goodness, soaking up all the flavor.
Once baked to golden perfection, the moment of truth arrives: the flip! With a
plate placed over the baking dish, a quick inversion reveals beautifully
caramelized buns, glistening with their sweet pecan coating. Don’t leave any
of that precious caramel behind – use a spatula to scrape every last bit from
the pan and drizzle it generously over your sticky buns. Trust us, you’ll want
it all!
These pecan sticky buns are more than just a breakfast item; they are an
experience. Imagine them gracing your table on a festive Christmas morning,
their warmth and sweetness filling your home with cheer. Or perhaps a leisurely
weekend brunch, paired with freshly brewed coffee. The combination of chewy
dried fruits like honey-roasted pecans, cranberries, and plump raisins adds
layers of texture and flavor, elevating this simple recipe to something truly
special. They’re so good, you might find yourself making multiple batches, but be
warned, they disappear quickly! While we primarily focus on oven baking for this
recipe, these gems can also be adapted for your air fryer, offering even more
flexibility.

Essential Ingredient Tips for Perfect Sticky Buns
-
Refrigerated Crescent Rolls: This is our secret weapon for speed and
simplicity. The key is to avoid unrolling the dough after opening the
package. Instead, slice the cylindrical dough into 12 equal pieces. This
creates uniform, delightful mini-rolls that perfectly absorb the sticky
sauce. Look for seamless crescent roll dough for an even easier experience. -
Packed Brown Sugar: Essential for that deep, rich caramel flavor.
Its molasses content contributes to the beautiful color and complex sweetness of
the sticky sauce. Make sure to pack it firmly when measuring. -
Melted Butter: We prefer using salted butter for an added layer of flavor
that balances the sweetness. If you’re looking for a dairy-free option,
a plant-based butter substitute works wonderfully without compromising
the texture or taste of the sauce. -
Pecans: Honey-glazed roasted pecans, readily available in bags, offer a
fantastic crunch and an extra layer of sweetness. However, plain chopped
pecans are absolutely fine. For an enhanced nutty flavor, consider
lightly toasting plain pecans before adding them to the mixture. -
Maple Syrup: This forms the liquid base of our luscious sticky sauce. You
can also use agave nectar or honey for a slightly different, but equally
delicious, sweet profile. Each offers a unique subtle flavor to the caramel. -
White Granulated Sugar: Used in combination with cinnamon to coat the
crescent roll pieces, adding an extra sweet crunch. As we like to say,
don’t count the calories when it comes to these irresistible treats! -
Cinnamon and/or Nutmeg: These warm spices are crucial for that classic
comforting aroma and taste. A generous dash of cinnamon, perhaps with a
hint of nutmeg, evokes a cozy, autumnal flavor profile that complements
the sweet caramel perfectly. -
Dried Cranberries or Mixed Fruits: These add a delightful chewiness and a
touch of tartness that cuts through the sweetness. Dried blueberries,
cherries, or a combination of mixed berries are excellent choices.
Feel free to customize your sticky buns with your favorite toppings. Mini
chocolate chips, walnuts, or even a sprinkle of shredded coconut can add a fun
twist, though we are particularly fond of the classic nutty version.
The Unbeatable Ease of Crescent Roll Sticky Buns
The reason we champion refrigerated crescent rolls in this recipe is their
unparalleled convenience. Traditional sticky buns, while delicious, require
making a yeast dough from scratch, which involves kneading, proofing, and
waiting for the dough to rise – often for hours. With crescent rolls, all that
waiting is eliminated. There’s no need to activate yeast, no lengthy proofing
period in a covered bowl, and no rolling out dough. The dough is already
perfectly prepared and portioned for you.
For the best results, look for crescent roll dough that does not have
perforations, allowing you to create neat, uniform slices. This ingenious
shortcut means you can achieve bakery-quality sticky buns in a fraction of the
time, making them an ideal choice for busy mornings or spontaneous cravings.
Flexible Baking: Using Frozen Dough for Sticky Buns
While refrigerated crescent rolls offer ultimate convenience, you can also
achieve fantastic results with frozen dough. If you opt for this method, the key
is proper preparation. First, you will need to completely defrost the frozen
dough according to package instructions, typically overnight in the refrigerator or
at room temperature for a few hours.
Once defrosted, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick, creating a
rectangular shape. Then, slice it into 1-inch wide pieces. You can either leave
them as strips or gently roll each strip into a spiral, mimicking a mini cinnamon
roll shape, before proceeding with the recipe as described for refrigerated
dough. This flexibility ensures you can enjoy homemade-style sticky buns even
when crescent rolls aren’t on hand. We whipped these up one weekend, and they
were devoured in about five minutes! I barely managed to save three for my
husband before the kids finished them off. The dried cherries, blueberries, and
raisins were a personal favorite addition, adding bursts of fruity flavor.

After baking, when you’re ready to serve, remember the dramatic flip! Invert
the pan onto a serving plate, allowing all that gooey, caramelized goodness to
fall onto the buns. Don’t hesitate to spoon any remaining sugar-pecan mixture
from the pan over each one. The sauce will continue to thicken and become
perfectly sticky after just a few minutes of resting.
Individual Delights: Baking in a Muffin Tin
For individual portions and easier serving, baking these sticky buns in a muffin
tin is a fantastic option. You’ll simply divide the buttery, sugary, and nutty
mixture that normally goes into the bottom of an 8×8 pan into 12 equal portions,
placing one portion at the bottom of each muffin cup. Then, arrange one cinnamon-sugar
coated crescent roll slice on top of the mixture in each divot.
Once baked, use a spoon to scoop out each individual sticky bun, flipping it
over onto a plate so the caramelized topping is on top. For even easier cleanup
and perfect non-stick results, consider using silicone baking cups inside each
muffin tin divot. This method is great for portion control and makes for a lovely
presentation.
Air Fryer Adaptation: Speed and Crispiness
For those who love the convenience and speed of an air fryer, this recipe can
easily be adapted. The principle remains the same as oven baking: the delectable
toppings are placed at the bottom, creating an “upside-down” sticky bun. When
they emerge from the air fryer, lightly browned and fragrant, you’ll scoop each
one out and flip it onto a plate, allowing the caramel to cascade over the top.
Serving them warm straight from the air fryer is highly recommended. The air
fryer can sometimes add an extra crispiness to the exterior of the buns, a
delightful contrast to the soft interior. While they’re cooling slightly, spoon
any extra topping from the pan over each bun. The warm caramel sauce will
thicken beautifully within a minute or two, creating an utterly amazing,
glossy finish. These sticky buns pair wonderfully with savory breakfast items,
such as our air fryer frozen sausage.
These pecan sticky buns, along with our homemade sweet rolls, are absolute perfection for a holiday breakfast like Christmas morning. They
are undeniably best when enjoyed almost immediately after they come out of the
oven or air fryer. Those few minutes after flipping and spooning the warm,
thickening sticky bun sauce over the top are crucial for maximizing their
irresistible flavor and texture.

Tips for Storing and Reheating Leftover Sticky Buns
While it’s rare to have leftovers of these irresistible sticky buns, it can
happen! To save any remaining buns, first allow them to cool completely to room
temperature. Then, wrap them tightly with plastic wrap or place them in an
airtight container. Store them on your kitchen counter for up to 2-3 days.
When you’re ready to enjoy them again, a quick warm-up in the microwave is all
it takes. Heat for 15-30 seconds, or until warmed through, and the caramel
sauce will soften and become deliciously gooey once more. They’re still a
wonderful treat the next day, bringing back that initial morning delight. You

Equipment
-
1 8×8 inch baking pan
Ingredients
-
1 roll crescent rolls, refrigerated,
not unrolled, sliced into 12 pieces -
1/3 c brown
sugar, packed -
1/3 c butter,
melted -
2 tbsp maple syrup -
1/4 c cranberries, dried
or dried mixed fruits -
1/4 c raisins -
1/3 c pecans, we used
honey glazed roasted in a bag -
2 tbsp sugar -
1 tsp cinnamon
Instructions
-
Melt your butter, then add the brown sugar and maple
syrup. Whisk these ingredients together until well combined. -
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and generously spray
your 8×8 inch baking pan with non-stick spray. -
Pour the butter mixture evenly into the bottom of the
prepared pan, spreading it to cover the entire surface. -
Evenly sprinkle your raisins, dried cranberries (or your
preferred dried berry mixture), and chopped pecans (or other nuts) over the butter
mixture in the pan. -
Open your can of refrigerated crescent rolls, but it’s
crucial NOT to unroll the dough. Keep it in its original cylindrical shape. -
Place the unrolled dough cylinder on a cutting board.
Using a sharp knife, cut the roll in half, then cut each half in half again, and
then cut those pieces in half one more time. This will result in 12 equal pieces of
your dough. -
In a small bowl, combine your granulated sugar and
cinnamon. Pick up one of your 12 dough pieces and gently press both cut ends into
the sugar/cinnamon mixture to coat. -
Carefully arrange each of your 12 dough pieces on top of
the butter/nut mixture in your pan. Place them in rows (e.g., 3 rows of 4 buns)
with the cut ends facing down towards the bottom of the pan. -
Sprinkle any remaining sugar/cinnamon mixture over the
tops of the rolls in the pan. Place the pan into your preheated oven and bake for
18-20 minutes, or until the rolls are very lightly browned on top and feel set
(not sticky) when gently touched. Avoid over-baking. -
Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and place it on
a cooling rack. -
While still warm, carefully place a serving plate over
the baking pan. Using pot holders, gently but quickly flip the pan and plate over
so the sticky buns are inverted onto the plate. Spoon any remaining sugar/pecan
mixture from the pan over each bun. -
The delicious caramel sauce will thicken and become
perfectly sticky after resting for just a few minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!
