This hiccup led us to Black Hills Caverns, and we’re so glad it did! The experience was intimate and unhurried. We practically had the cave to ourselves, sharing it with just one other family. This allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the tour, move at our own pace, and examine every fascinating rock formation up close.

Our full tour lasted about an hour, taking us through winding passages and up and down several sets of stairs, descending many football fields below the surface. Our knowledgeable guide pointed out various rock formations, explaining their origins and the geological processes that shaped them over millennia. Even my three girls, with their varying attention spans, found it remarkably interesting, especially seeing the ancient, collapsed passageways that hinted at the cave’s long history.
