There’s something inherently satisfying about pull-apart bread, and when it’s infused with the irresistible flavors of pizza, it becomes an instant hit. This recipe has quickly become a staple in our home, particularly with the kids. After experimenting with various savory pull-apart creations, the combination of gooey cheese and savory pepperoni tucked into soft biscuit dough proved to be a winning formula. It’s so simple, in fact, that my girls now happily whip it up themselves after school for a delightful afternoon treat.

Our journey into the world of pull-apart bread began with a cheesy garlic pull-apart bread recipe that was met with rave reviews. That success sparked an idea: why not explore the endless possibilities by incorporating other beloved ingredients? The answer became clear when thinking about what kids universally adore for dinner: classic cheese and pepperoni pizza! This realization laid the groundwork for our delightful pull-apart pizza bread, transforming a beloved classic into a fun, interactive, and super easy dish.

While Bundt pans often come to mind for pull-apart bread, for this particular pizza bread, a standard loaf pan truly yields the best results. We’ve experimented with both methods, and the loaf pan ensures a more even bake, preventing any doughy centers and guaranteeing perfectly cooked, tender pieces every time. If you’re looking to feed a larger crowd, simply double the recipe and bake two separate loaves rather than trying to overcrowd a single pan. Trust us, the loaf pan method is tried and true for achieving ultimate pizza bread perfection.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and accessibility, often utilizing ingredients you likely already have on hand. It shares a similar ingredient list with our popular pizza in a mug recipe, which is fantastic for a quick individual snack when cravings strike. If you haven’t introduced your little ones to the fun of pizza in a mug, it’s definitely worth a try – it’s a wonderfully engaging and tasty activity!

Essential Ingredients for Your Easy Pizza Bread

Gathering your ingredients is the first step to creating this delightful pull-apart pizza bread. Here’s what you’ll need and a few notes to ensure the best results:

  • Refrigerated Biscuits: The star of this show! We highly recommend using larger varieties, such as Grands refrigerated biscuits. These larger biscuits are much easier to work with, allowing for more substantial stuffing with sauce and toppings. Smaller biscuits tend to be fiddly and don’t create as satisfying a pull-apart experience. Any style, like Southern-style or butter biscuits, will work perfectly.
  • Spaghetti or Pizza Sauce: A jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce is perfect. You’ll only need about a third of a standard jar, leaving plenty for another meal, like Instant Pot spaghetti. While pizza sauce or marinara sauce are ideal if you have them, a good quality spaghetti sauce serves just as well and is often more readily available in most pantries.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded mozzarella cheese is the classic choice for its superior melt and stretch. However, feel free to get creative! A blend of mozzarella and cheddar, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan, can add a wonderful depth of flavor. Use what your family loves most.
  • Pepperoni Slices: While entirely optional, pepperoni slices are the quintessential pizza topping for a reason! They add a salty, savory kick that elevates the pizza experience. Don’t stop there, though. Consider finely sliced black olives, thin strips of pre-cooked bell peppers, or even cooked and crumbled sausage for additional flavor and texture.
  • Garlic Salt & Oregano: These seasonings are crucial for imparting that authentic pizza parlor aroma and taste. Don’t skip them! They truly bring all the flavors together.

Mastering Your Pull Apart Pizza Bread: Expert Tips

Crafting the perfect pull-apart pizza bread is simple, but a few expert tips can elevate your creation from good to absolutely phenomenal:

  • Topping Wisdom: While customization is encouraged, be mindful of your chosen toppings. Avoid excessively wet ingredients like fresh tomatoes or pineapple, as they can make the bread soggy. If you opt for vegetables like bell peppers or onions, dice them very finely. For meats, always ensure they are pre-cooked (like sausage or bacon bits) to prevent excess moisture and ensure even cooking within the short bake time.
  • The Parchment Paper Advantage: This is a game-changer! Lining your loaf pan with parchment paper before assembling the bread makes removal a breeze. Once baked, you can simply lift the entire loaf out onto a cutting board, allowing for easy slicing and serving. Plus, it makes cleanup a cinch!
  • Speedy Preparation: This recipe is incredibly quick to prepare, typically taking no more than 15-20 minutes of active time. The faster you assemble, the less time the biscuits sit out, which helps maintain their texture.
  • Visual Cues for Doneness: Keep an eye on the top of your loaf. It should be beautifully golden brown. If it’s browning too quickly, you can loosely tent it with aluminum foil for the remaining bake time. The internal layers should be cooked through and cheesy.
  • The Importance of Resting: After baking, let the pizza bread rest in the pan for about 5 minutes. This brief resting period allows the cheese to set slightly and makes the bread easier to handle and pull apart without everything falling apart.
  • Serve with Dips: For an extra layer of flavor and fun, serve your pull-apart pizza bread with warm marinara sauce for dipping. A side of garlic butter or ranch dressing also makes a delightful accompaniment.
  • Sweet Counterpart: If you enjoy the pull-apart concept, consider making a sweet version for dessert! Our Cinnamon Pull Apart Bread is a fantastic option that can be served after your savory pizza feast.

Equipment

  • 1 9×5 loaf pan

Ingredients

  • 1 can refrigerated biscuits, Grands used
  • 1/3 cup spaghetti sauce, or pizza sauce
  • 3/4 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 oz pepperoni, could add a handful of sliced olives and/or thinly sliced mushrooms too
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175°C).
  2. Open the biscuit tube, separate the individual biscuits, and then cut each one in half. Use the palms of your hands to gently reshape each half into a round disc.
  3. Take one biscuit disc and spread a small amount of spaghetti or pizza sauce on top. Layer with shredded cheese and a few slices of pepperoni. Place another biscuit disc on top, repeating the sauce, cheese, and pepperoni layers to create a small “stack.”
  4. Once you have a stack of 2-3 biscuit halves (depending on how thick you want each pull-apart piece), carefully line them up sideways in a loaf pan that has been lined with parchment paper. Continue this process, stacking and arranging the biscuits until the loaf pan is filled.
  5. Lightly sprinkle the top of the entire loaf with garlic salt and oregano. For an extra cheesy crust, feel free to add another generous layer of mozzarella cheese over everything.
  6. Bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through. Remove from the oven.
  7. Allow the pizza bread to rest in the pan for 5 minutes before carefully lifting it out using the parchment paper. Serve warm and let everyone pull apart their own cheesy, pepperoni-filled pieces!

Bundt Pan vs. Loaf Pan: Which is Best for Pull Apart Pizza Bread?

While the loaf pan is our preferred choice for this particular pepperoni pizza bread, it’s worth exploring alternatives. You can certainly make a type of pull-apart bread in a Bundt pan, but the approach differs significantly, resulting in a different texture and experience, often resembling a savory monkey bread. In that method, you typically cut biscuits into smaller pieces, toss them in a large bowl with olive oil, Parmesan cheese, and your chosen toppings, then arrange them in a Bundt pan before baking.

This Bundt pan method, while equally delicious, usually requires a longer baking time due to the dense packing of smaller biscuit pieces and the shape of the pan. The loaf pan version, as outlined in this recipe, creates distinct, easy-to-pull-apart slices that are evenly cooked and perfectly portioned. The Bundt pan, on the other hand, offers a more communal, tear-and-share experience where the pieces are less defined. Both are fantastic in their own right, but for the specific goal of quick, easy, and family-friendly pizza bread with distinct, cheesy layers, the loaf pan truly shines. Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with either, but knowing the difference helps you choose the perfect method for your desired outcome.
