There’s nothing quite like the joy of giving your dog a special treat, especially one you’ve made with your own hands. My puppy, Paige, absolutely goes wild for these easy homemade dog biscuits, and I’m confident yours will too! This recipe was inspired by a friend who used whole wheat flour, and I decided to enhance it with a touch of honey and, of course, plenty of peanut butter. To my surprise, they were much easier to make than I ever imagined! (Please note: this post contains affiliate links, originally published in April 2020).
Why Choose Homemade Dog Treats?
While we’ve experimented with various dog treat options in the past, such as dehydrated meat treats, sometimes you want to give your beloved companion something truly special – a sweet indulgence they can really savor. I’ve yet to meet a dog who can resist the allure of these scrumptious peanut butter biscuits.
Have you ever considered baking homemade peanut butter dog treats? Or perhaps even explored cooking air fryer dog treats? I used to think making dog treats from scratch was a time-consuming endeavor, something only for experienced bakers. However, recent experiences have shown me just how quick and rewarding it can be. With minimal prep and bake time, I whipped up two dozen biscuits in about half an hour. It’s truly easy-peasy, and your pup will shower you with gratitude!

Essential Ingredients for Homemade Dog Biscuits
Let’s dive into the simple, wholesome ingredients that make these homemade dog treats so special. As a first-time dog owner with Paige, I often find myself Googling “Can dogs eat ______?” to ensure I’m always giving her the safest and most nutritious options. It’s crucial to understand what goes into your pet’s food, and these biscuits are crafted with ingredients known to be safe and beneficial for most dogs.
Is Peanut Butter Safe for Dogs?
Peanut butter is a popular and often beloved treat for dogs, offering a good source of protein and healthy fats in moderation. However, it’s absolutely vital to choose the right kind. From extensive research, any peanut butter that does not contain xylitol (a sugar substitute toxic to dogs) or chocolate is generally considered safe for dogs, unless they have a specific peanut allergy. Always check the label meticulously. Organic, natural peanut butters with minimal ingredients (just peanuts, and maybe salt) are typically the best choice.
Crucial Warning: DO NOT buy or use peanut butter brands that contain xylitol. These include, but are not limited to: Go Nuts Co., Krush Nutrition, Nuts ‘n More, P28 Foods, and Protein Plus PB. Always double-check ingredient lists to keep your pet safe.
Can Dogs Have Crunchy Peanut Butter?
Yes, dogs can safely enjoy crunchy peanut butter! The difference between crunchy and smooth varieties is primarily the texture due to the presence of peanut chunks. As long as it’s free from xylitol and chocolate, crunchy peanut butter is just as safe as its smooth counterpart for your canine companion.

Is Whole Wheat Flour Safe for Dogs?
Absolutely, whole wheat flour is safe for dogs and can even offer health benefits when included in their diet in appropriate amounts. It provides dietary fiber, which aids digestion, and various nutrients. Unless your dog has a specific allergy to wheat or requires a grain-free diet, baking with whole wheat flour for your pup is perfectly fine.
Is It Good to Give Your Dog Honey?
Honey is generally safe for dogs to consume in small quantities. Raw honey, in particular, contains beneficial enzymes, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties that can support your dog’s immune system and soothe allergies (especially local honey). However, caution is advised for very young puppies, elderly dogs, or those with compromised immune systems, as raw honey could potentially pose risks due to dormant bacteria. Always offer honey in moderation.
Are Eggs Good for Dogs?
Yes, eggs are an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals for dogs! They can be a highly nutritious supplement to your dog’s diet. I’ve thoroughly researched this, and as long as they are cooked (raw eggs carry a risk of salmonella and biotin deficiency) and don’t cause an upset stomach for your particular dog, feeding dogs eggs is generally a healthy choice.
How to Make Homemade Dog Treats: A Simple Guide
Making these peanut butter dog biscuits is incredibly straightforward, even for novice bakers. Here’s everything you’ll need to get started and a step-by-step breakdown of the process.

Ingredients for Your Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits:
- Whole wheat flour (ensure you measure flour properly)
- Honey
- Peanut butter safe for dogs (crucially, without chocolate or xylitol)
- Baking powder
- Egg
Essential Baking Tools:
- Mixing bowl (or stand mixer for ease)
- Cutting board (a non-stick surface or silicone baking mat works best)
- Baking sheet (non-stick is ideal, or line with parchment paper)
- Knife or dog bone cookie cutters (optional)
For me, simplicity is key! I often skip the rolling pin and cookie cutters. I literally use my hands to flatten the dog biscuit dough to about a 1/2-inch thickness and then use a knife to slice it into convenient bar shapes. Our dog, Paige, loves them no matter their appearance, and I bet yours will too! This no-fuss approach makes homemade dog treats accessible to everyone.

Dog Treat Recipe: Simple Instructions
This is a fantastic recipe because it’s so easy that even kids can help prepare it, making it a wonderful family activity. Plus, your fur baby will certainly give you extra love and appreciation! Our girl absolutely adores these.
- To make things even easier, I often use my stand mixer.
- Simply combine all the ingredients in the mixer and mix until they are well combined. A paddle attachment works perfectly for this easy recipe.
- Once mixed, transfer the dough to a cutting board. I roll out the dough using just my hands, but you can certainly use a rolling pin if you prefer. The natural oils in the peanut butter help make the dough pliable and prevent it from sticking, which is a wonderful bonus. If you don’t have a cutting board, a large piece of parchment paper sprayed with a little coconut oil works just as well – simply roll the dough between two sheets until it’s flat.
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
- Once the dough is about 1/2-inch thick, cut it into desired shapes. You can use fun dog bone cookie cutters or simply slice them into bars with a knife.

- Arrange the shaped treats on a non-stick baking sheet.
- Bake them for approximately 20 minutes until they harden. For our treats, they came out not rock-hard, but with a slight tenderness in the center when cold, which I found to be the perfect texture.
- After baking, leave the treats on the baking sheet until they are completely cooled. This allows them to finish hardening and develop their final texture.
- Finally, share these delightful homemade dog biscuits with your pooch! (Always ensure your dog is not allergic to any of the ingredients before serving.)
I’ve seen other homemade dog treat recipes that incorporate sweet potatoes or rolled oats. While those sound interesting, my dog seems to have a strong preference for all things peanut butter. Also, I rarely have sweet potatoes on hand, making this recipe more convenient for me. Next time, I plan to experiment by substituting 1/2 cup of canned pumpkin for some of the peanut butter to see how she likes that variation. I’ll be sure to share my findings! For a nutritious meal option, don’t forget to try our slow cooker dog food recipe too.
