Why I Quit Everything at Forty

There’s a monumental shift that often happens when you reach a certain age, a profound awakening that can feel like pressing a complete reset button for your life. For many women, that pivotal moment arrives when they are turning 40. It’s an age that frequently brings with it a liberating sense of clarity, a point where priorities organically shift, self-awareness deepens, and the courage to shed what no longer serves your highest good truly emerges. This is precisely what I mean when I say turning 40 changes everything! It’s why I willingly “gave up” certain things when I crossed this threshold, and looking back, I am profoundly glad I made those choices. Have you experienced these transformative “aha moments” too, as you’ve navigated your own unique journey?

I distinctly remember hearing throughout my thirties, “40 is truly a great age; you’ll understand when you get there.” At the time, those words felt distant and somewhat abstract, something I couldn’t quite grasp or internalize. Yet, as my own milestone birthday approached and eventually arrived, the profound truth of that sentiment became crystal clear. “They” were absolutely right! There’s an undeniable and unique magic that accompanies the monumental 40th birthday; it feels profoundly liberating, empowering, and incredibly affirming. This significant shift in perspective and priorities is exactly why I’m so happy about the choices I made and the specific things I decided to release when I turned 40. Allow me to share what this transformative period has taught me and what “giving up” truly meant in my personal journey. Embracing the Forties: A Woman’s Journey of Self-Discovery and Empowerment

Reaching 40 was, without a doubt, a significant and defining turning point in my life. It felt like stepping into an entirely new chapter with a fresh pair of eyes, a renewed sense of purpose, and an enhanced clarity. Every individual life, of course, comes with its own unique set of challenges and stresses – some navigating more turbulent waters than others. For me, growing up as an only child with divorced parents and very little extended family to speak of, I learned early on to rely primarily on myself and the unwavering, genuine support of a select few friends throughout my formative years. This foundation of self-reliance, though undeniably challenging at times, inadvertently prepared me with resilience and discernment, qualities that would later prove invaluable as wisdom began to blossom.

As the years progressed through my twenties and thirties, a deep and unyielding craving for simplicity, authenticity, and profound honesty began to take root within me. The relentless pursuit of external validation, fleeting interests, or superficial connections started to fade into the background, replaced by a keen desire to distill life down to its absolute, most precious essentials. It’s akin to sifting through countless pennies and ultimately discovering a few, truly valuable “quarters” – those genuinely significant people, experiences, and values that hold true worth. For me, this profound realization wasn’t a gradual whisper or a slow-burning insight; it arrived with the bright, unmistakable clarity of a lightbulb switching on in a previously dim room. This moment of profound insight, a true “aha!” revelation, truly crystallized around my 40th birthday, fundamentally reshaping my perspective, refining my priorities, and igniting a renewed sense of purpose.

Liberating Lessons: What I Consciously Released and Embraced at Forty

The decision to “give up” wasn’t about surrender in a negative, defeatist sense; rather, it was a powerful, intentional act of conscious release. It was a deliberate choice to shed burdens, expectations, and relationships that no longer served my highest good or contributed positively to my well-being. This proactive step allowed me to create invaluable space for genuine joy, authentic connections, profound personal growth, and a deeper sense of inner peace. Here are some of the key areas where I made the liberating choice to let go:

  • I gave up investing energy in relationships with friends who weren’t my true cheerleaders in life. You know those individuals, often disguised as girlfriends, who seem to constantly be in a subtle (or sometimes not-so-subtle) competition with you? Instead of genuinely celebrating your triumphs and offering heartfelt encouragement, they might become envious, distant, or even subtly undermine your successes with backhanded compliments or passive-aggressive remarks. Yes, those are precisely the ones I’m referring to.
    • Like most people, I aspire to achieve success, fulfillment, and happiness in my life. I firmly decided that nothing and nobody would be permitted to distract me from my forward momentum or from pursuing what genuinely brings me joy and contentment. This meant making the tough but absolutely necessary choice to gracefully disengage from anyone who wasn’t truly advocating for my well-being, celebrating my progress, or contributing positively to my journey.
    • While this decision inevitably meant that my immediate core group of friends might diminish considerably in number, I can honestly say I’m incredibly grateful and liberated that I stopped pouring my precious time and emotional energy into those unreciprocated “friendships.” Instead, I consciously redirected my focus and efforts towards those rare and precious individuals who genuinely desired the best for me, creating a more supportive, uplifting, and authentic social circle that truly nourishes my soul.
  • I stopped perceiving the glass as half empty, embracing a mindset of profound gratitude and abundance. This particular shift was incredibly profound and transformative, especially in my role as a working mother. There are countless moments, often far more frequent than we care to admit, when we might find ourselves looking at a friend who appears to “have it all” – perhaps they don’t need to work, or seem to lack any major financial worries, or effortlessly balance every aspect of life – and a quiet, wistful wish emerges to trade places, even just for a day.

Such comparisons can be incredibly detrimental, insidiously fostering a sense of lack, inadequacy, and discontent rather than appreciation for what one already possesses. However, when I hit 40, a powerful and undeniable realization dawned on me with striking clarity: while there would always be countless material things I might wish for or aspire to acquire, the absolute most important, foundational elements in my life were my personal health and the well-being of my beloved family. As long as I possessed these fundamental blessings and dedicated my best efforts to maintaining them, everything else became secondary, almost peripheral. This profound understanding allowed me to release anxious striving and instead trust that the universe, or life itself, would eventually align the remaining pieces in due time.

A heartwarming motivational quote about a mother's inherent strength, inspiring resilience, self-acceptance, and the power of letting go of comparison.
  • I realized that people, by and large, would not change, and that’s perfectly okay. As mature adults, we intellectually understand the inherent futility of trying to force others to change or conform to our ideals. Yet, who among us hasn’t attempted it, perhaps more times than we care to admit? Whether it’s trying to alter your spouse’s mildly irritating habits, hoping to influence your parents’ deeply ingrained behaviors, or striving to correct others’ inaccurate and often unfair perceptions of who you are, it’s a common, albeit almost universally fruitless, endeavor that drains immense emotional energy.
    • Eventually, and quite liberatingly, I simply gave up on these fruitless attempts. I recognized that my core values – being a kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and hardworking mom who genuinely aims to make positive contributions to the world around me – are what truly define me. Focusing on these intrinsic qualities and living authentically according to them is all that genuinely matters.
    • While we all have areas for continuous self-improvement and personal growth (myself absolutely included), the profound peace that comes from truly realizing you can only ultimately change yourself, and then consciously focusing all your precious energy on that personal journey, is unparalleled. This fundamental shift in perspective is incredibly liberating, fostering greater acceptance of others as they are, and ultimately leading to a deeper, more sustainable tranquility within oneself.
  • I gave up on the exhausting and unattainable idea of being the “perfect mom.” To be absolutely clear, it’s not that I ever genuinely believed I could achieve absolute, flawless perfection. However, many of us harbor this persistent societal illusion that we can flawlessly juggle every demanding aspect of life simultaneously: excel at work, provide exceptional education to our children, maintain a pristine home, cook gourmet meals, parent with infinite patience, exercise regularly, and nurture relationships – all while maintaining an unblemished, picture-perfect sanity.
    • When you observe another mom who appears utterly composed, impeccably put together, and with a radiant smile perpetually fixed on her face, it’s incredibly easy to assume she lives a life devoid of problems, stress, or struggle. Yet, beneath that perfectly curated exterior, she might secretly be crying out for help, feeling overwhelmed, and simply unsure how to voice her struggles or ask for the support she desperately needs. We simply don’t know the full story behind anyone’s facade! What I’ve profoundly come to understand is that, deep down, we are all navigating our own unique form of beautiful chaos. We are all “a hot mess” to varying degrees, simply doing the very best we possibly can with the resources, energy, and knowledge we have, and some are just better at masking it than others, my friends.
    • I vividly recall the challenging years I spent as a single parent, raising my daughter, often convinced I was making countless mistakes and doing everything wrong. I constantly second-guessed myself, burdened by self-doubt. Looking back with the invaluable wisdom of hindsight, I now see that I genuinely did the absolute best I could with the limited resources, energy, and knowledge I had at the time. And ultimately, she blossomed into an incredible, amazing, and resilient young woman. This profound experience taught me the invaluable lesson of self-compassion, trusting my instincts, and recognizing that “good enough” truly is enough.
  • I gave up trying to “look perfect” every single day, embracing my natural, authentic self. This meant a definitive and liberating farewell to the daily ritual of wearing a full face of elaborate makeup. Honestly, I simply don’t enjoy the process, and I found it to be a tedious chore! Let’s be real – my ideal morning routine now involves a refreshing shower, generously moisturizing my skin with nourishing products, a quick sweep of powder or a dab of tinted moisturizer on my face, and then I’m ready to GO! With three active children and a demanding full-time job, there simply isn’t ample time, or frankly, the persistent desire, for all that other elaborate stuff. Besides, I’ve always been intrinsically drawn to a more natural aesthetic, finding beauty in simplicity. A surprising and utterly delightful side effect of this change? My skin actually began to look remarkably better, clearer, and healthier without the daily application of heavy, pore-clogging products! Who would have thought that less could actually be more?
