Your Comprehensive January Cleaning & Decluttering Checklist
Let’s dive into the core components of our January cleaning checklist, designed to help you tackle key areas of your home. Each item on this list is a step towards a more organized and functional living space.
1. Thoughtful Donations: Giving Back and Clearing Out
We all accumulate items that, while still functional, no longer serve us or bring us joy. You likely have many things that someone else could use more. Donating these items is a crucial step in organizing your house. Before you donate, ensure items are clean and in good condition. Consider what charities in your local area accept, from clothing and household goods to books and electronics. This practice not only helps those in need but also frees up significant space in your home, making your living environment feel lighter and more spacious.
2. Smart Kitchen Organization: Combining Liquids Safely
After tackling donations, let’s move to a practical kitchen or utility room tip. When you have two half-bottles of the SAME liquid, such as window cleaner, dish soap, or liquid hand soap, you can safely combine them into one container. This simple act can save you quite a bit of cabinet or counter space. Of course, always exercise caution and only combine bottles with the *exact same* liquid. Mixing different chemicals can be dangerous and should always be avoided.
3. Evaluating Kitchenware: Scratched Pots and Pans
- I am certainly not the only one who keeps her pans longer than she should. Take a close look at your pots and pans and check for any signs of damage. Specifically, inspect the non-stick (Teflon) coating. If it’s scratched, flaking, or peeling, it’s a clear sign that these items need to be replaced. Flakes of the coating can end up in your food, which is not good for your health.
This is a definite sign that you need to replace them. Thankfully, quality cookware sets have become much more affordable over the years, and you truly deserve a new set that is both safe and efficient! We highly recommend sets designed for space-saving, where pots and pans nest perfectly inside one another, a fantastic solution for any kitchen, big or small. This simple kitchen upgrade makes a huge difference.

Deeper Dive into Your January House Cleaning Checklist
Beyond the kitchen, our purge checklist extends to crucial areas of your home, focusing on security, storage, and personal spaces.
4. Protecting Your Identity: Shredding Documents and Credit Cards
As part of your January purge, take time to go through old documents and expired credit cards. It’s paramount to safeguard your personal information. When getting rid of important papers, always use a reliable paper shredder. Look for one that can also shred old credit cards. This ensures that sensitive information cannot be retrieved, protecting you from identity theft and fraud.
5. Tackling Tupperware and Storage Containers
- Do you have a cabinet overflowing with mismatched plastic containers and missing lids? You’re not alone! If you possess genuine Tupperware, you might be able to purchase replacement lids directly from the company.
- However, most of us have a collection of generic plastic storage containers, many of which have lost their lids over time, rendering them useless. This January, treat yourself! Invest in a new, complete storage container set. Opt for sets with stackable designs or those made from durable glass to maximize space and functionality.
6. Clothing and Wardrobe Overhaul: Revitalize Your Closet
With kids, there’s a constant rotation of outgrown clothing, toys, electronics, and various other items around the house. Throughout the year, it’s easy to push aside things we really need to purge, especially clothing. Take this opportunity to tackle your closet head-on. A good rule of thumb is to consider getting rid of clothing you haven’t worn in at least six months to a year. Be honest with yourself about what you truly wear and what just takes up valuable space. This practice not only creates more room but also makes getting dressed easier and more enjoyable.

7. Playroom Peace: Toy Rotation for Less Clutter
Once you’ve ventured into the playroom and purged what the kids have outgrown or no longer play with, we highly recommend implementing a toy rotation schedule. This strategy is a game-changer for maintaining order and keeping toys feeling “new” again. By only having a selection of toys available at any given time, you can significantly reduce clutter and encourage more focused play. This is the last, but certainly not least, item on the cleaning checklist under the playroom section.
- Toy rotation is a fantastic way to revitalize old toys and keep clutter to a minimum. It encourages children to engage more deeply with fewer items and makes cleanup much easier.
8. Post-Holiday Refresh: Refrigerator Clean-Out
Now is truly the best time to begin your deep cleaning and purging efforts, especially with the holidays behind us. Starting the new year fresh and clutter-free provides a sense of accomplishment and calm. Once all the holiday leftovers are used up, you might want to consider a complete refrigerator clean-out. This involves not just wiping surfaces but also checking expiration dates, discarding old condiments, and reorganizing shelves for optimal freshness and accessibility.
