A bunch of bananas sits on a countertop beside two bowls: one filled with mini marshmallows and the other with chocolate chips. A hand cuts open a banana, turning it into a delightful banana s'mores treat by stuffing it with mini marshmallows.

OK…are you ready for this??!! I mean you will never look at a BBQ the same way, and you will get TONS of compliments when you add this to your next barbeque get together, seriously! We make this treat during the summertime and an easy way to make dessert on the barbecue.

You are probably used to baking with very ripe fruit if you are going to bake something like our 4 ingredient banana bread with them or something. This one is different where you want them to stay a bit firmer or the texture is just off. Instead use very yellow with maybe just a bit of brownish on the edges.

Now you can make Smores in the Oven this way too at 375 until the tops are browned and the outside of the peel feels a bit soft. When it is hot outside though I don’t want to heat up my house so on the grill they go.

Ingredient Notes

Now as for the main star of the show you want some bananas that are ripe, not green, but barely brown is ideal. You do not want them so brown that they are mushy.

Mini marshmallows are what we like to use so you can kinda’ press them into the center so they don’t fall off (that would be a real mess). You can use white or the multicolored rainbow variety.

Semi sweet chocolate chips are the best ones for this for a really rich flavor but any type is fine. There are peanut butter, white and butterscotch out there too.

You could crush and sprinkle a bit of graham cracker crumbs on top if you wanted to

Tips for Cooking Banana S’mores on the Grill

This is how easy these grilled bananas are to make with very little prep work, are cheap, and delish. If you are not grilling anything beforehand, set the grill to medium. You could also make these in an oven at 400 degrees. You don’t want high heat. Low and slow, just like grilling s’mores, is all you need to soften and melt all the ingredients.

To keep them set up straight and not falling over, you can make a sort of boat out of aluminum foil, or wrap the banana in foil (but it won’t get the top brown that way), or use a small 8×8 pan. This works perfectly for grilling bananas for desserts, bananas on the grill for dessert, or even making a banana grilled dessert. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a fun banana boat s’mores variation for a sweet twist!

Can you make smores over a charcoal grill?

You can!! If you use a piece of foil over white coals once they have cooled down you can layer your grahams, marshmallows and chocolate piece until it melts. OR make our banana s’mores! We will show you how to make them that way in this post here. Easier and better made right inside the peel.

How to do s’mores without a fire?

This way technically isn’t a fire if you are using a gas grill or coals that no longer have a flame really. You could use a microwave too. Split and open the fruit, microwave for 1 minute, then sit upright on a plate to fill the insides and heat for another 1 minute. Another way if you are at home is to make our smores poke cake.

Pretty sure it is. If you look up it’s origin it started with the Girl Scouts actually in the 20’s and took off from there. It is hard to think of a campfire without this classic dessert right? From there people have been using the same 3 ingredients to make all other kinds of s’mores desserts like our banana version here.

We do a lot of BBQing and adding desserts to the grill. Just seemed like a natural progression over the years. As far as that is concerned, here are some more barbeque desserts we’ve made also that are yummy!

For a great overripe bananas recipe, give our Bisquick banana bread recipea whirl. It is another great win with this fruit you can do when they are very very dark and need to be used.

Banana S’Mores Recipe

Banana s'mores on the grill is an easy bbq dessert to make after your dinner is done cooking. Grilled bananas in their skins can be served up as is and enjoyed with marshmallows and chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 4 large bananas (yellow with just a touch of brown)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows

Method

  1. 1

Just slice the banana lengthwise and squeeze the ends so that it opens up a bit more for the fillings. It is best to find ones that are already slightly brown and softer to do this.

  2. 2

Push the chocolate chips down into the bottom of the bananas. Push small marshmallows down on top of those. If you are a nut lover then put a layer of crushed peanuts, walnuts, or almonds in between or on top.

  3. 3

Put on the BBQ after your meats are done. That way the heat has died down, no flames, and coals are white. Wait until they get really warm and start to brown…and everything melts.

  4. 4

To keep them set up straight and not falling over you can make a sort of boat out of aluminum foil, wrap the banana in foil (but it won't get the top brown that way) if you want or use a small 8×8 pan.

  5. 5

Serve right in the peel with a fork to enjoy.
