This one pot recipe must be on your list for this week. Packed with flavor and served on top a bed of rice, it’s one of our favorite Indian recipes. Find this and over 100 more Instant Pot recipes we make on our site year round.
Have you tried butter and beef together?? How about with some curry powder? I mean just the thought of all those flavors together I bet is getting your mouth to water right?
I will explain how to do it in our pressure cooker below but in a pot on your stove top would work too. If you are making as a Ninja Foodi recipe it works the same way except you use the lid that is not attached.
OMG there is literally the best Indian restaurant in Salt Lake City I went to with my friends years ago. Ok it was my first experience with this food but it was so good I just needed to make it at home. Best reason for this other than it is cheaper is that you can make it spicy too if you want.

Ingredient Notes
Can you make butter beef with ground beef?
I suppose you could. With these other ingredients it would definitely taste different, with a different texture entirely. If the ground beef is very lean, adding a small amount of butter or cooking oil to the pan is necessary when you brown it initially, other than that I don’t think you’d need to change anything.
Butter is yes the second most important item in this dish. I prefer salted Kerrygold variety because it is the creamiest with the richest flavor.
Onions go in everything around here. Sliced is great, diced will kinda’ dissolve but will lend flavor you’ll want. White and yellow works, I just use what is on hand y’all.
What cut of beef do you use for butter beef?
If you’re ready for tender thin cuts of beef tonight I’d give this a try. Use any type of steak in the Instant Pot you wish, make as a stew meat recipe or use beef tips. I have used many different types and they all work well. The trick is to just slice thin so it can get nice and super tender with every bite this way. Use steak, a roast or even stew meat then grab these other items from the store.
Tomato sauce is the base of the sauce to make it rich and give it oomph. You could use spaghetti sauce instead or half the amount of tomato paste as that is rather thick and you don’t want it too strong.
Vegetable broth or beef broth or 1 cup of water can be used but won’t be as flavorful, same goes for making pressure cooker beef ribs.
Heavy cream or dairy free alternative like coconut milk will give it that rich creaminess to the sauce to coat each piece of beef.
As for the seasonings we use Granulated garlic (different from garlic powder, but use that if you must) to add a pop of flavor. We use Chili powder for a bit of heat and Yellow curry powder for a traditional Indian flavor.

Served typically just as is in a bowl you can pair it with some rice or even naan on the side to scoop it up. If you have eaten it at a restaurant you might have your favorite duo beyond those.
How Long to Cook Butter Beef in Instant Pot
Cook time is only 5 minutes however you have to take into account the 10 minutes it takes for the steam to fully release at the end. At the beginning it will also take about 10 minutes for the pot to reach pressure and start the timer as well.
Should you saute beef first?
This is not really necessary before adding other ingredients. Typically this is done if you want a bit of a crust on the outside but you want really tender pieces that fall apart in your mouth in this case so I do not do it.
How do you know when it is done?
The meat should be fork tender when done. It is all about the texture. Using a pressure cooker is the best method for this because it cooks under high pressure to break down the connective tissue so it literally melts in your mouth. If it is chewy you cut the pieces too thick, slice thinner next time for cook time below.

What should you serve with butter beef?
We always serve it over Instant Pot white rice. You could have mashed potatoes with it. Pressure cooker quinoa is a great gluten free and protein packed side dish. Having 1/4 cup vegetables with it are always a win
If you want to make another Indian recipe that’s similar to this, try our slow cooker butter chicken.
The cook time is very short for this Instant Pot beef recipe. As with most Instant Pot steak recipes you don’t want to cook it too long or the meat will not be as tender as you’d like.
