Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage

We are all about cabbage recipes lately because we’re growing a bunch in our garden this year! Thus, this casserole was created the other night. Just one of the many favorite Instant Pot recipes listed on Zopago blog for your family to enjoy too.

Let’s talk aboutsimple cabbage recipes though shall we? We just love them because they’re so quick and easy! Yes, even my 3 girls will eat just about anything with this undervalued vegetable. Maybe it’s in our genes.

We made a batch of Crockpot cabbage and sausage with potatoes before and it was a hit. This time I thought noodles would be fun to try instead of the other starch. You could use kielbasa sliced into dials instead of ground like we did here too as another option.

Ninja Foodi Sausage and Cabbage

It is on our roundup of easy Ninja Foodi recipes as well if you happen to have that pressure cooker and air fryer machine. You will use the lid that is not attached to make this one with the high pressure function. You won’t need the other one as we want all the ingredients to be as tender as possible.

Tips

Biggest tip to this cooking well is to ensure that your pasta is submerged into the liquid below as much as possible. That way it will become tender the way you want it to. My Grandma ate a lot of it I tell you! As a child I wasn’t so sure but once I got this “magical all in one appliance” I got hooked too when I made this pressure cooker fried cabbage recipe.

It was based off hers written on a piece of paper that of course she cooked on her stovetop for years upon years. I adapted it to be made in my Instant Pot and it was a hit with everyone!  SO, I just kept going with this Instant Pot cabbage and sausage recipe here.

Chopped sausage, diced onions, and shredded cabbage are simmering inside an Instant Pot. The image highlights delicious pressure cooker sausage recipes you can try at home.

It’s quite simple really, and you only need a few ingredients to make it. Just like our Ninja Foodi cabbage that is simple with just some salt and pepper, you’ll need about 1/2 a head total. Of course you are going to need an electric pressure cooker for this, if you have an Instant Pot I HIGHLY recommend getting a non stick pot.

Ingredient Notes

You will want half of a Cabbage head, green was used and preferred for the best texture and flavor. Red (or purple some call it) is much firmer and would need an extra minute if you swapped that out. This is how to cut cabbage into bite size squares which is what we prefer in this case

I have used different meats but in this case I prefer Ground sausage, we prefer 1/2 spicy Jimmy Dean and 1/2 regular so it is a medium heat level but you could go for hot with the whole thing. This offers a lot more flavor that beef.

  1. I use a can of diced tomatoes, petite is my prefernce
  2. Noodles we used were penne but any small style would work, optional
  3. Use Chicken broth, or vegetable or beef, whatever you’d prefer is fine
  4. Garlic minced, jarred or you could dice up fresh cloves

Here are the basic steps of how to cook cabbage under high pressure below: First you’ll want to prep everything which just means you’ll have to dice your onions and cut cabbage into 1″ squares. Everything else is done! Could you use sausage links sliced instead of ground sausage? Yes!!

Cabbage and Sausage with Kielbasa

From start to finish this will take you under 30 minutes to make perfectly cooked cabbage and sausage with noodles. If you wanted to slice a kielbasa sausage link into dials or half moons even you could use that instead of the ground meat. Follow the same directions sauteeing them a bit with oil to bring out those pork flavors initially though.

How Long to Cook Sausage and Cabbage in Instant Pot

It doesn’t take long to cook noodles or diced cabbage leaves so believe it or not you just need to prep and then set to high pressure for 4 minutes. After pressure cooking is done do a quick release. The larger the noodles the more time needed. Butter noodles or small sizes would need 3 minutes.

Try not to damage or bruise of your cabbages, this can lead to it not lasting as long as it degrades the vitamin C content. If it is properly stored it can last from 3 weeks to up to 2 months in your refrigerator. If cut in half it should be stored in an air tight freezer bag or container. Once cut it will only last a few days without turning brown on the cut end and starting to break down.

Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage Recipe

Pressure cooker sausage and cabbage with noodles is a simple Instant Pot Ninja Foodi dinner idea that's packed with flavor. Served with parmesan cheese on top we all love it.

  • Serves 5
  • Prep 10 minutes
  • Cook 3 minutes
  • Total 13 minutes
  • Course Entree, Main Course
  • Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground sausage (I use half pound of Italian, 1/2 lb of spicy sausage)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 small onion (sliced or diced)
  • 1/2 head cabbage (cut into cubes, 2’x2′ pcs)
  • 1 tbsp garlic (minced)
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups noodles (uncooked, we used mostaccioli)
  • 1.5 cup broth (vegetable is what we used, if not adding noodles only use 3/4 c.)

Method

  1. 1

Turn your pressure cooker to saute and add olive oil, sausage and diced onions.

  2. 2

Cook until sausage is no longer pink, then add garlic and mix together. Turn pot OFF and scrape bottom of pot to deglaze (can add a bit of your broth to make sure you get all bits off).

  3. 3

Add can of diced tomatoes and mix. Spread out on bottom of pot.

  4. 4

Add uncooked noodles to the top of that and do NOT mix. Pour your broth on top of your noodles. Put cubed / broken up cabbage leaves on the very top. Can omit noodles entirely if you don't want them, if not using noodles decrease broth to 3/4 c.

  5. 5

Close lid and steam valve and set to manual high pressure for 3 minutes.

  6. 6

Do a quick release, then stir contents if you've added noodles so they are mixed in well. Put lid back on and allow to sit for 3-5 minutes before serving so noodles soften a bit more mixed in.

  7. 7

Enjoy…great with some parmesan cheese on top!
