Yes Bisquick Sausage Balls are delish, I would say that if I had to compare the two these are more buttery with the Southern seasonings like Old Bay you will just love! Using a boxed baking mix to start with though makes it even easier, so let’s share how we made them.

These bite size savory appetizers or snacks are made from a mixture of ground sausage, cheese, and a dry binder such as baking mix. Rolled into bite-sized balls and baked until golden and cooked through, these are popular for parties, potlucks, and holiday gatherings. Easy to prepare, most will serve with dip(s).

We found an alternative here, for an alternative to using Bisquick. You can use any sort of biscuit mix really in it’s place but some are better than others. Jiffy baking mix is another choice but not as moist as others. In this case we used boxed cheddar bay biscuit mix that has the most flavor of them all.

Create mouthwatering sausage balls with biscuit mix, savory pork sausage, and shredded cheese, all held together with melted butter and a flavorful spice blend. For an extra twist, try using Red Lobster Biscuit Mix for that irresistible taste of garlic and herbs everyone loves.

Ingredient Notes

We are going to start with 1 box of Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix which will be in the baking aisle near the cake mixes. This is the only mixture of dry ingredients necessary because the leavening agents are already mixed in there (bonus).

Butter or dairy free plant based alternative should be melted so it be able to combined and wet the dry mixture well. I like to use salted just to add a bit more of a pop of flavor but isn’t necessary.

Cheese should be shredded with a grater, sharp cheddar cheese is our favorite type but you could really go with any type you really love or mix and match a few. I have used a lactose free variety from Daiya and since it is mixed in with all the other flavors you don’t notice much of a difference other than it doesn’t melt as nicely.

For the meat we are going to go all out with a roll of Ground sausage, spicy or regular Jimmy dean is great, breakfast sausage has a sweet flavor that I don’t care for in this case. Chives chopped are optional but add a bit of flavor and bang

You will want a cookie sheet and some parchment paper. If you want smaller bites try our Pressure Cooker Sausage Balls in a silicone egg mold. Either way you will want a bowl to mix ingredients.

How to Make Spicy

If you wanted to add even more heat and spice into the mix you could base the seasonings off of our Mexican Taco balls, but use this dry mix as the base for them. Or add a pinch of dry Sriracha or chili powder into the mix.

How Long to Cook Sausage Balls with Red Lobster Biscuit Mix

You just need about 15 minutes to bake these on a sheet pan to done!! Super quick appetizer idea huh? I will tell you that it is a real hit and I can prep and have these done right before guests come over for the Super Bowl. I usually have to make two batches because they are such a hit!

Do you have to cook the sausage first?

Nope!! You will incorporate the ground sausage right out of the roll, raw, with the baking mix and cheese. There is plenty of time to cook the meat to a safe temperature in this time so no prepping is necessary to begin with. 😉

How do you know when sausage balls are done?

Just like when we bake our Bisquick sausage muffins you want to make sure that the very center (thickest part) is cooked all the way thru. You could use a thermometer to see if it has reached 160F but generally you can tell because the juices run clear and when broken apart the meat is white, but still tender.

You can make our Bisquick Cheddar Bay Biscuits Recipe and use that dry mix instead of buying boxed too. With them we have served it as a side dish of course but beyond that made Chicken Pot Pie with Red Lobster Biscuits for a full dinner!

FAQ

If you start with a boxed mix like Bisquick or for Red Lobster Biscuits you can add a lot less ingredients. From there you just need shredded cheese, butter, chives and ground pork. Spicy Jimmy Dean is the best for a bit of spicy and tons of flavor.

If you want to make a large batch you can bake 1 sheet pan full and then put them into a slow cooker set to warm. Before you put the lid on though, place a few paper towels across the top so if there is condensation it will be absorbed and not get wet.

How to Save Leftovers

If you have leftovers you would want to store them after they cool down completely. Store in a freezer bag with all of the air sucked out of there so no condensation builds up and they get wet. Reheat in the air fryer at 380 F. for 1-2 minutes or in the microwave for 30 seconds.
